✈ Benjamin Holbrook ✈
Position: 7th Grade Math Teacher
School: Alliance Middle School
Graduation Year: 2010
Years at ACS: 2

Favorite Memory:
"My favorite memories are of participating in all the musicals, the show choir trip to NYC, and playing soccer all four years."

Influential Staff Member:
"Chris Shively (Social Studies and AP-US) and Madame Barnes (French) were my favorite core teachers while at AHS. Both of them created awesome classroom environments and made us think critically. We felt respected and valued in their rooms. Mr. Fisher, Mrs. Sabik, and Mr. Fontaine were a huge part of my ACS experience and heavily influenced my early career in music education and music history."

Choosing to work for ACS:
"I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility for the community that raised me (mainly due to conversations with teachers like Chris Shively, Chris Schillig, Shawn Jackson, and Keith McGeehen while at AMS and AHS). So when an opportunity came up to interview at AMS, I jumped on it right away."

Importance of giving back:
"So many of my peers, myself included, did everything in their power to get out of this town when we were young. And while escaping this one small section of the world was fun and exciting at the time, and while you might get away from the things you disliked about your hometown, at some point you realize that if everyone does that—if everyone leaves and doesn’t come back—then there is quickly no one left to be there to make the positive changes or continue the things that you loved about where you grew up. The kids in Alliance today deserve every great thing this town gave me and more, and I want to be part of making sure it exists for them."

Coming full circle, Mr. Holbrook’s dedication to his students and ACS shows what it means to invest in the community that once invested in you. 🩵❤️ #RepthatA

Cheryl Jackson's class at Alliance Middle School have been studying apples and their five senses. 👃 Recently, they used their senses to make art with apples! 🍏 They created apples out of crushed tissue paper and stamped with apples. Everyone enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to future activities! #RepthatA

✈ Matthew Horning ✈
Position: Career Exploration Teacher
School: Alliance Middle School
Graduation Year: 1995
Years at ACS: 27

Favorite Memory:
"My favorite memories involve times when I was learning through experiences...a 4th grade play with Julie Poyser, middle school invention competition with Sally Vasilevich, cross stitching in Bill Carli's geometry class, and making a silent film with friends for Jim Ballor's humanities class."

Influential Staff Members:
"My honored educator my Senior year was Jim Ballor. He knew so many things about so many different topics and it was just fascinating to not just learn about English but also talk about movies and music and theater.

I met Gary King when I was in elementary school and he was working at Rockhill. Over the years he moved around in various roles and coaching jobs but was always someone who made me feel important and welcome."

Choosing to work for ACS:
"I recognize that many doors were open to me and many adults pointed me towards those open doors. I felt called to return and help students find their path to success even when their journey might be more challenging than mine."

Importance of giving back:
"I think it helps build trust between teachers and families when they know you grew up as an Aviator. There is something special about working with the children of people who were once my classmates and also seeing former students of mine out working in the community."

Today, Mr. Horning helps students discover their own paths, just as his teachers once did for him—an Aviator Alum inspiring future generations. 🩵❤️ #RepthatA
